How are picatinny rails attached to guns?

Toya Braskett: Depends on the gun. Pistols with under-barrel rails are built in and cannot be removed. Rifles can have them like that, or more commonly they'll be held in by screws.

Sammy Tabatt: The ones I do and also read about are attached with counter sunk screws and can be removed at any time.

Sharolyn Claybourn: Many guns have pre-tapped screw holes. You just line up the holes on the rail with the screw holes and screw it in place. The old Remington XP100 for example had three screw holes on top of the receiver for attaching a rail or scope. Some companies make a clamp type rail that will clamp around the receiver or barrel and as you tighten the screws on the clamp it locks onto the gun. There is one for the Ruger Mark series target pistols. The receiver and barrel do not move so the clamp goes right over the bolt at the rear of the gun. Some companies make a specific rail for a specific gun. For example, there is one that will fit on a Ru! ger Ranch rifle simply by removing one screw from the rifle, putting the rail in place and replacing the screw with a supplies longer screw. The most important thing is if you are using the rail to mount a scope, you need to make sure the rail attaches to the gun in a very firm manner with no wiggle....Show more

Donnie Bolio: Some screw on. Other's are machined straight out of the receiver.
